2nd PRIZE WINNER - Enhancing the St. Lawrence Waterfront in Quebec

Part of our proposal was the reuse of the decommissioned railroad. A tool kit with rules was put together based on the width of the railroad and surrounding circumstances that provides a guideline on how that strip of land should be reused to benefit the community around. Certain areas were too intricate to fit in one of the toolkit categories, so they were transformed into important connections between the waterfront, it’s new park and the historic streets running parallel to the shore.

We also took the opportunity to think about this project on a smaller scale - how can we make our macro-intervention strategy tangible on a smaller scale as well? As a counterbalance to a regional redevelopment of the Dufferin Montmorency highway, we additionally propose reinvesting in the former railway line that crosses the Beauport neighborhood upstream of the highway. Transforming it into participatory plots, with multiple uses dependent on their direct juxtaposition, will help regenerate local communities, diversify the use of these places
with local businesses, and above all offer more autonomy to citizens. It is this new dynamism that will also enable them to fully connect with the restored coastline.

The separation between shoreline and local neighborhoods is very evident and was our main concern when developing the winning proposal. Furthermore the shoreline transition used to be significantly softer and more gradient. Our proposal intends to restore it to its original condition.

The original space of the @fulgurances_laundromat restaurant was a laundromat that was accessed via two steps. Since we were changing the use of the space, we had to provide an accessible entrance. How do we provide universal design without taking up too much of the valuable interior space and installing a bulky ramp? The result is a multi-layered ramp, that allowed us to (mostly) avoid railings and create smooth transitions between the exterior and interior.

Fulgurances, Laundromat opened in May 2021 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, acting as an incubator, welcoming young chefs to take over the kitchen in order to find and refine their identity, test their ideas and learn how to manage a team before setting off to open their own restaurant. Curating talent, the restaurant’s concept is a rotating chef series with residencies from 3-6 months.

Spatially we achieved this by narrowing the customer space, and literally bringing it closer to the storefront. Visually, we worked with color and the it’s ability to divide space, attract the eye and focus it on the merchandise.

The latest occupant was a concrete artist that was using the ground floor as his atelier. He created a giant ‘do it yourself’ skylight that was not able to be salvaged but inspired us enormously. The ground floor space hosts an inverted skylight, that we call ‘sunken garden’, bringing light from above down into space through a sunken box that interrupts the continuity of the gallery space.

The many exterior alterations deviated quite a bit from the original design - in close communication with LPC we have carefully restored it’s original characteristics, while introducing an unexpected, very contemporary element in the interior.

The design aims at bringing together two private, yet social spaces: the terrace of the residential duplex above and a cultural program in the city at street level. Each visitor will confront a new connection between 2 programs generally secluded one from the other in the city.

We have the honor to currently be working on a true historic gem in Brooklyn Heights. It is one of the oldest homes in the neighborhood - a wood-frame house in the Federal-Style that dates to the early 19th century.

When working with landmarks and historic buildings the starting point is always research, research, research. Which current features were present when the building was built, which ones were added later on, which ones were removed, and which ones are essential for the historic character. We work closely with LPC to fulfill our and the client’s visions in alignment with the official guidelines. In this case one of the challenges was to fit a spacious living & dining room into the first floor while ensuring a comfortable and spacious kitchen setup. We discovered that the house originally had a portico on the first floor which was removed during renovations in the 1940s. We have the honor to currently be working on a true historic gem in Brooklyn Heights. It is one of the oldest homes in the neighborhood - a wood-frame house in the Federal-Style that dates to the early 19th century.

When working with landmarks and historic buildings the starting point is always research, research, research. Which current features were present when the building was built, which ones were added later on, which ones were removed, and which ones are essential for the historic character. We work closely with LPC to fulfill our and the client’s visions in alignment with the official guidelines. In this case one of the challenges was to fit a spacious living & dining room into the first floor while ensuring a comfortable and spacious kitchen setup. We discovered that the house originally had a portico on the first floor which was removed during renovations in the 1940s. In our proposal, the reinstated portico will be the kitchen, allowing for an ample living and dining space. We can’t wait to share the final images with you!

In November, Côme was invited as a guest speaker to the Sustainability in Real Estate Panel hosted by our dear friend @newyorkbythurber of @thurber.team at @serhant. It was a pleasure participating in how us architects can do to foster positive change and collaboratively shape a greener future in the industry.

As the end of the year is approaching, we would like to look back at our achievements. This spring our founder taught a design studio in @u_soa alongside with @megangrehl. The studio traveled to the French Alps and presented their proposal for @le_1647_ in La Clusaz.

It was a fulfilling experience to teach. Our talented architecture studio showcased their hard work and dedication throughout the semester. Congratulations to a successful end of thier senior year!

A special thank you to the team @le_1647_ who welcomed us so warmly and ensured we’d have a great time, with lots of adventures, showing us around, and trusting us with their project. It was great to be back once again!

This project combines contemporary art & design, with historic Parisian characteristics, creating our perfect our home away from home. Each corner of the apartment carries its own characteristic. While preserving the existing moldings and wall panels that reflects the apartment’s historic Parisian flair, the space is delicately decorated with the antique furniture pieces from the 60s & 70s collected by Come's mother @lesmainsdodile, mixed with contemporary elements by @megangrehl to create a timelessly chic Paris apartment.

We put this gem upside down as it needed a thorough transformation. From exterior work, facade re-design & interior renovation, all the way to millwork details.
